I have fed the birds for years and of course the squirrels join the feast. Rather than use feeders I just scatter the seed like you would for chickens. Squirrels have their faults, but they can also be very entertaining as well. Their antics usually make me laugh.
Squirrels are so weird. I think they do just like destroying things. They nip the heads off my dad's tulips but don't eat any part of the flower. And this year they began eating the bark of his apple tree...not the applies, of which there are an abundance...the bark. They also like to take just one bite out of my still green tomatoes.
It was quite satisfying and entertaining to discover a dug up radish with a single bite out of it and the rest of the bed undisturbed. The unpleasant spicy ground "nut" seemed to deter them for a week. :P
